Unlike conventional interest-based pawnbroking, the charge under the Ar-Rahnu arrangement is described as a storage or safekeeping fee for the pledged item.

Applicable charges, financing amounts, storage fees and redemption terms are subject to the final assessment and documentation provided at the branch.

01 Is ValueMax Ar-Rahnu certified by MUIS, and who is the Shariah adviser?

MUIS does not certify pawnbroking shops. ValueMax’s Ar-Rahnu service is guided by its Shariah adviser, Mohd Kamal Bin Mokhtar.

The Ar-Rahnu service is currently available at the Joo Chiat and Haig Road branches.

02 What is the difference between Ar-Rahnu and conventional pawnbroking?

The main difference concerns the structure of the arrangement and the nature of its charges.

Conventional pawnbroking generally charges interest on the principal amount borrowed. Under the Ar-Rahnu arrangement, the applicable charge is described as a storage or safekeeping fee for the pledged item.

03 Why is a monthly percentage charged if Ar-Rahnu does not charge interest?

The percentage represents the applicable fee for storing and safeguarding the pledged item rather than interest charged on the financing amount.

The branch team will explain the current fee, calculation method and applicable terms before you agree to the transaction.

04 Ar-Rahnu and conventional pawnbroking look similar. How are they different?

Both services may involve pledging a valuable item and receiving financing, so the customer experience can appear similar.

However, their contractual structure and treatment of charges are different. Ar-Rahnu is structured around Shariah principles, with applicable charges connected to the storage and safekeeping of the pledged item.
